MSc Aviation Management awarded by London Metropolitan University (LMU). This is recognised as a Level 9 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
Students are registered as postgraduate students of LMU and will receive a student card confirming their student status.

What will I study during this MSc Aviation Management course?
During this Masters programme, you will learn about the latest systems and technologies of aviation, ensuring you have the most up-to-date knowledge, in a sector that’s constantly evolving. You will learn about the concept of e-commerce within aviation management and the impact the digital age will continue to have on the strategic activities of airlines and airports. You will learn about leadership and strategic management theories and further develop your leadership skills through the application of theory to practice.
Studying project management and developing the ability to create, manage and close projects effectively is an important skill developed during this programme. Making use of project management software is another key skill you will develop. You will be introduced to the different theories, methodologies and data sources which will allow you monitor and understand the logistical strategies developed by the major global producers and consumer goods intermediaries.
Exploring the sustainability context, and how business practices will need to evolve to reflect the realities of operating within a globalised trading system that is striving to apply sustainability principles is a key benefit of studying this programme. This is an important area of increasing scrutiny for airlines and airports.
Learning to evaluate the complex range of financial issues that airline managers have to address to ensure a sustainable business in the long term and how to manage the critical aspects of negative financial exposure that are common in the sector.

I have been a tutor in Portobello Institute for 15 years and I am also programme manager for the Travel and Tourism department. I teach Airline Studies, Customer Service, Travel Agency Service Skills, Tourism Principles and Practice and Personal Development. My own journey in the Travel and Tourism industry has been wide-ranging, working in USIT, Failte Ireland and Aer Lingus. I have held positions in customer service, sales, marketing, recruitment and training. It was while working in Aer Lingus Training and Development that I discovered my true passion for teaching and education. My style of teaching is to engage and motivate each individual, encouraging them to become confident in their own skills and abilities. Classes are fun and involve groupwork, presentations and simulations of real-life scenarios. I want to instil a value in the importance of excellent customer service and I am constantly amazed at how much I learn from my students as we share our stories and experiences. My goal for each of them is to have the courage and self-belief to follow their dreams.
Your experience as a Programme Manager.
As programme manager it is so important to me that each learner is fully supported throughout their time in Portobello. Class sizes are small so each tutor can offer individual support with assignments and assessments. We place huge value on getting to know each student individually and we are acutely aware that from time to time they will have personal challenges in their lives. Part of my role as program manager is to support and encourage each student to stay on their learning journey. There are always options available so learners can be assured that the teaching team and I will work through finding a solution to each and every issue.
At Portobello we want to help students to achieve their goal of a career in the Travel and Tourism industry – we pride ourselves on creating new experiences for them by visiting tourist attractions such as EPIC, Viking Splash, Vaults.ie or The Guinness Storehouse. This also includes trips to Industry Expos, Airports, aircraft simulators and we have informative onsite and offsite guest lectures from industry professionals such as DAA, Aer Lingus, Tour Operators and Tourism organisations. Our tutors are a passionate team of industry professionals who constantly keep us up to date on industry developments. We have established links with many organisations, many of whom employ graduates of Portobello Institute. It is through these links that we have successfully placed students on work experience, internships and in full time-positions. How will I learn?
Blended learning takes the schedule of a traditional face to face learning programme and re-structures it to reduce the contact tuition time by introducing more online learning together with one to one tutor support. This mode of delivery includes contact tuition and web-based e-learning sessions. The e-learning platform is interactive including recorded sessions, webinars with weekly content and assigned tasks to themes and topics. There is a seminar held at the commencement of each module. Attendance is not mandatory. The seminars are designed to support students understand the requirements of the learning outcomes, the expectations of the assessment and meet their tutor for the module.
This masters programme is delivered over three academic semesters.
All of the course material is held on Moodle, which is an easy to use online platform which will support your classes. To complete this course, students must have a basic knowledge of using a computer and searching the internet for research purposes.
Webinars & Tutor Support
The tutorial webinars are held at the start of each module and are designed to guide and support you throughout the module. These webinars lay out the module for you and the content you will cover. The assessment and expectations for successful completion are covered in detail as is where and how to access the information on the Moodle platform. Entry is by direct application to Portobello Institute You will be required to have:
- a minimum of a 2.2 (or equivalent) in a related subject discipline
The course is also open to professionals already working in the aviation industry who may not necessarily have an undergraduate degree. However, you must have a minimum of two years related work experience at managerial level within the industry. This will need to be confirmed by two letters of reference. You’ll also need to submit a CV in support of your application.
