Contemporary content for modern physical education
Developed in 2023, this master’s degree program has been designed and developed to incorporate contemporary and pertinent content that aligns with the current landscape of physical education in modern society. You will also learn about the underpinning principles of sports science as well as practical learning and teaching skills relating to work as a physical education teacher or sports coach. Effectively plan, teach and assess
In this master’s program, you will learn how to effectively plan, teach, and utilize assessment methods within your specific subject area. Research Methods and Physical Education Pedagogy (20 credits)
The module aims to provide students with the critical knowledge and skills to understand, discuss and evaluate physical education in Ireland and internationally. It will provide students with an advanced knowledge and understanding of current and innovative pedagogical practices as highlighted by the JCPE and LCPE and international equivalents. Students will have the opportunity to critically compare best-practice research evidence with current policy and practice nationally and internationally. Students will have the opportunity to develop evidence informed practice and needs based action research and intervention to inform their own professional development as reflective practitioners.
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Critically evaluate the role of national and international governments in implementing PE policy, provision and practice.
- Critically explore pedagogical knowledge, understanding and skills in PE and identify how theory and practice relate to one another.
- Critically explore research methods and how research approaches can be used to improve standards of policy, provision and practice in PE.

Physical Education as a Learning Process (20 credits)
This module encourages continuing development as physical educators and adoption of attitudes, values, and practices that will positively affect growth as a teacher over the short and long term. Understanding of principles, concepts, and skills that promote best practices, professional leadership, and critical inquiry are pursued within this module. This module requires dedicated placement hours and supervised practice for successful completion.
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Critically appraise the role of physical education as a learning process for holistic development across the life-span.
- Demonstrate a range of teaching methodologies that promote active and differentiated learning within the organisation and management of PE.
- Demonstrate confidence in designing and delivering effective learning opportunities for physical, social, psychological and emotional growth.

Teaching Efficacy and Teacher Development (20 credits)
This module encourages continuing development as physical educators and adoption of attitudes, values, and practices that will positively affect growth as a teacher over the short and long term. Understanding of principles, concepts, and skills that promote best practices, professional leadership, and critical inquiry are pursued within this module.
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate how to plan, teach and use assessment effectively in your specialist subject, draw on a range and depth of Physical Education knowledge and pedagogy.
- Secure progression of all groups of learners by demonstrating confidence in appropriate and innovative learning activities that progress students through curricular requirements, managing behaviour effectively and creating an atmosphere conducive to learning.
- Take responsibility for learning and through reflecting on assessment, data and evaluating lessons.

History, Policy and International development of Curriculum of PE (20 Credits)
Module Aims: To provide an opportunity to understand curriculum concepts and investigate the extent to which personal, cultural and societal orientations and philosophies impact on curriculum.
To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required by teachers in secondary school settings to teach and assess Physical Education curricula and to use of PE curricular knowledge in an inter-disciplinary or cross-curricular way.
Learning Outcomes:
Design a scheme of work that demonstrates the relationship between assessment, learning goals and learning experiences (instructional alignment), determining what is worth assessing and how this can be done in a meaningful, relevant and effective way. Critically appraise characteristics of various curriculum models, principles that determine their use, and the advantages and disadvantages of using different curriculum models in physical education.

Dissertation in Physical Education (60 credits)
This module aims to enable students to reinforce the skills necessary to carry out a scientific programme requiring significant research. It will allow students to demonstrate the final development of their subject knowledge, skills and understanding through extended research based on educational settings and literature review. During this module, students will develop the skills necessary to plan, carry out, analyse, and report upon the results of an experimental or analytical programme on a scientific topic relating to physical education. The module gives students the opportunity to attain achievement of a high level of personal development by working independently with the necessary supervision. This research will lead to the oral presentation of a detailed written report.
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Apply skills and competencies to plan develop and design research including ethics submission for an area relevant to their programme of study.
- Critically present and appraise the research in a written format .
- Present the project and defend choices made in a scientific manner.

Physical Education Teacher Education and Development (20 credits)
This module encourages continuing development as physical educators and adoption of attitudes, values, and practices that will positively affect growth as a teacher over the short and long term. Understanding of principles, concepts, and skills that promote best practices, professional leadership, and critical inquiry are pursued within this module.
Upon completing this module, students should be able to:
- Critically examine local and global development issues in physical education, cultural and sociological contexts and how they inform the role of continuing professional development in physical education.
- Critically explore of the physical education teacher as an agent of change in schools and society.
- Demonstrate use of reflective practice and action research in teaching and learning to explore the relationship between theory and practice in physical education.

Physical Literacy and Universal Models in Physical Education (20 credits)
The purpose of this module is to develop a critical understanding of the importance of universal and international approaches to physical education. Physical Literacy is a universal model that has received traction in Australia and Canada as an evidence based approach to developing the physical and psychological concomitants required to maintain a physically active lifestyle outside of the structured or mandated physical education setting. The model aims to inspire forward thinking, passionate advocates for becoming physically literate and the importance of physical education remaining a protected, valued and resourced form of education in Government policy.

Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically review the evidence base underpinning models used in physical education settings.
- Critically examine the role of physical literacy in the wider education context.
- Demonstrate confidence in designing lessons that promote physical literacy across the life-span

How will I learn?
The Difference between Blended Learning and In-person on weekdays Delivery Modes
There are two delivery mode options for this master’s available at Portobello Institute giving you the freedom to choose how you will learn and making education accessible around work and life commitments.
In-person on weekdays delivery offers you the opportunity to study with a more traditional schedule with lectures delivered on-site in Portobello during weekdays.
Blended Learning is essentially the same, with a blend of online and on-site lectures taking place at the weekends. It makes studying for a masters degree more accessible if you live outside of Dublin.
All online-only lectures are recorded for you to catch up on later. Where lectures are delivered onsite – these will simultaneously be delivered online and will also be recorded so you can customise your learning journey – attend on-site, online, or catch up later.
Having the flexibility to choose whether you attend a lecture as it is taking place or to catch up later means you can seamlessly access and fit education into your life whilst still continuing with your everyday life.

During the induction seminar, we will show you how to navigate and find what you need with all of the information you need to complete this programme uploaded on to ePortobello. The content of this programme is set out in an easy to follow format with a combination of notes, articles, podcasts and other materials that will help you to understand the subject and complete your assessments.
Course Structure
During this Masters programme you will complete six taught modules and one dissertation. You will study three modules in both semester one and in semester two. Your final semester will be dedicated to your dissertation project in Physical Education.
Placement
Students who plan to apply for the Qualified Teacher Status must complete 120 days of placement across two secondary schools (the majority of placement days can be spent in one school). A typical school day is 3-4 hours per day. We provide support sourcing placements however students are responsible for sourcing placements suited to their location and availability.
The Academic Calendar - October 2024 Start Date
- Semester 1 runs from 05/10/24 – 25/01/25
- Semester 2 runs from 08/02/25 – 31/05/25
- Semester 3 encompasses the Capstone Project and runs from 06/06/25 – 31/08/25. During this semester, you will work with your supervisor to complete a work-based project. Individual tutorials are generally held at times convenient to both. There are no taught modules during this semester.

Real Life Learning Opportunities
Work Placement
Students who plan to apply for the Qualified Teacher Status must complete 120 days of placement across two secondary schools (the majority of placement days can be spent in one school). A typical school day is 3-4 hours per day. We provide support sourcing placements however students are responsible for sourcing placements suited to their location and availability.
As part of your MSc in Physical Education, you will gain important practical skills and experience through placement. While school settings are recommended, flexibility will be provided to students to also complete placements in other related contexts such as sports clubs and community settings.
How will I be assessed?
SMART assessments – we use a range of assessments for each module designed to support a broad range of learning styles, giving you the opportunity to excel.
The primary aim of the varying assessment styles is to support you to demonstrate your knowledge of theory and practical as a result of a range of assessments.
Group assignments will add another dimension to your learning experience – they will help you to learn to work in teams and will provide you with benefits of peer learning.
All these methods are seeking to support you to combine theory with scenario-based learning and encourage and guide you for future implementation into your career as a physical education professional.

Career prospects
Alternative route to PE teaching with this programme
With an MSc in Physical Education, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education International (PGCEi), and 120 days placement across two schools, you are eligible to apply for QTS through the Assessment Only (QTS AO) route. This combined programme of MSc Physical Education, PGCEi and QTS AO is available as a single 2 year programme with an integrated approach to teaching placement and assessments. QTS is an English teaching qualification which provides access to teaching in UK and international schools. Application for registration with the Teaching Council of Ireland will have to be made through the “qualified abroad route” and is reviewed by the council on a case-by-case basis.

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college
Applicants will be required to have a minimum of a 2.2 (or equivalent) in a related subject discipline. You should also submit an up-to-date CV and copies of awards/professional qualifications.
For non-standard entry, applicants would need to be able to demonstrate a comparable academic standard through past studies and relevant work experience.
