The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching & Physical Education is a future-focused undergraduate degree designed for those who want to build a career in sports coaching, physical education, or progress towards PE teaching. Whether you are a school leaver, a recent graduate, or an adult learner looking to upskill or change career, this programme provides a clear, flexible and professionally aligned pathway into a growing sector.

Delivered in two modes: in-person weekdays or blended learning, the programme supports learners at different life stages. The in-person weekdays delivery is ideal for school leavers and those recently out of school, while the blended learning option is designed for people already working in sport, fitness or education, or those seeking a career transition alongside employment.

A dual pathway degree: Coaching or PE teaching

This degree is deliberately structured to keep career options open. It provides a strong foundation for:

  • Progression into sports coaching across community, youth, performance and participation settings

  • Progression towards Physical Education teaching, aligned with the Curricular Subject Criteria for Physical Education (2023)

Graduates who wish to become PE teachers will be academically prepared to progress to a Professional Master of Education Physical Education (PME PE), while those pursuing coaching careers will graduate with applied skills, real-world experience and sector-relevant knowledge.

Apply Early – Secure Your Conditional Offer

A key advantage of this programme is the opportunity for students to receive a conditional offer before sitting the Leaving Certificate. Securing a place in advance provides clarity and reassurance at a crucial stage, significantly reducing the pressure and uncertainty often associated with exam results and the CAO process. Knowing that a pathway into higher education is already in place allows students to approach their Leaving Certificate with greater confidence, focus and peace of mind, while giving them time to plan their next steps with certainty.

Professionally aligned, practice-based learning

The curriculum blends theory and applied practice across all key areas of the Irish PE curriculum and contemporary coaching practice. Students develop expertise in:

  • Human anatomy, exercise physiology and nutrition

  • Movement education, pedagogy and coaching principles

  • Inclusive physical activity, digital technologies and healthy lifestyles

  • Leadership, research skills and evidence-based practice

Crucially, students complete two structured placements:

  • Year 2 – Coaching Placement

  • Year 3 – PE Setting Placement

These placements allow students to experience both sports coaching and PE teaching environments, helping them make an informed decision about their preferred career direction while building a strong professional CV.

Wide career opportunities

Graduates are well prepared for a broad range of roles, including:

  • Sports coach (youth, community, performance or participation sport)

  • Physical education teacher (via progression to PME)

  • Sports development officer

  • Physical activity and wellbeing coordinator

  • Community sport and inclusion roles

  • Outdoor education and adventure learning roles

  • Further study in education, sport or health sciences

A supportive learning environment

Students benefit from small class sizes, one-to-one academic support, and access to an excellent placement network across coaching and education settings. The programme is led by a dedicated and highly experienced Programme Lead with extensive real-world experience in both sports coaching and PE teaching, ensuring students gain practical insight, professional mentoring and career guidance throughout their studies.

Awarded by University of Essex, graduates will hold an instantly recognised qualification. This is a degree designed not just to educate, but to open doors, giving graduates the knowledge, experience and confidence to build a meaningful career in sport or physical education.

Module Description

In this module we will focus on the acute and chronic adaptations to exercise and training of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscular systems and consider how each system contributes to limitations of human performance. We will explore how the nervous and endocrine systems integrate the response to exercise and training. We will also explore differences in response and adaptation between adult and paediatric participants in exercise.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and function of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, muscular and endocrine systems
  2. Discuss the responses of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscular systems to an acute exercise bout
  3. Evaluate the roles of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscular systems in the limitation of human exercise performance
  4. Discuss the responses of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscular systems to an exercise training programme
  5. Explain how the nervous and endocrine systems co-ordinate the acute and chronic responses to exercise
  6. Show competence in collection, collation and analysis of data from various physiological practicals.

This module examines how humans grow, develop, and age from early childhood through older adulthood, encouraging students to view physical activity, sport involvement, and health through a life course lensStudents explore physical, motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development across the lifespan, and consider how these developmental changes shape participation, performance, learning, and health related behaviours. The module will build students’ ability to interpret developmental information so they can recognise and respond appropriately to individuals’ needs, capabilities, and challenges, and support students to work confidently and professionally with different age groups in coaching, PE, and applied health contexts.

Aims:

  • Introduce key theories and concepts of human development across the lifespan.
  • Develop understanding of how physical, motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development progress from childhood to older adulthood, and how this affects participation, performance, and wellbeing.
  • Build students’ ability to interpret developmental information when considering individuals’ needs, capabilities, and challenges in sport, PE, and health settings.
  • Encourage critical awareness of how social and environmental factors across the lifespan influence physical activity patterns, health trajectories, and sport involvement.
  • Support students to reflect on their emerging professional role and responsibilities when working with different age groups in coaching, PE and applied health contexts.

“I very much took the scenic route to education,” Anthony Sheriff, Programme Lead.

After leaving school in Ireland, Anthony spent a year in Australia before returning to Ireland before then going to college in Liverpool. From there he found his way to different cities in the United Kingdom before spending two years as a teacher in Dubai.

Travelling the world may or may not have been a goal for Anthony that he was always aware of but it definitely would have been a surprise to his younger self that he was travelling as a teacher.

“When I was a teenager absolutely I was sports mad. Right back as far as I can remember as a child, my mam always says that I was kicking a football before I could walk. You’d probably struggle to find a sport that I haven’t played or competed in at one stage.

“I was never the academic type. I was never the type to be massively interested in school apart from PE. When I was in school all I wanted to do was to be out playing sport really. It’s not that I hated school, I got the work done that had to be done but I think my mind was just on sport the whole time so I was never massively interested,” he said.

Initially after leaving school, Anthony worked in different jobs. He was a greenkeeper, worked in a bar and in construction. He moved to Australia for a year on a whim when his friend asked him if he wanted to go.

Anthony openly admits that he didn’t know what he wanted to do at that stage of his life.

College didn’t become an option for him until he was 22 years of age after leaving secondary school at 18. It was all that time he spent on building sites in Australia that made him realise what he really wanted to pursue in life.

“I was doing a lot of these labouring jobs and it was a bit of craic and all on the site, it was enjoyable at times but I realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do long term. That’s when I started to have a deep think about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”

Following his passion for PE, Anthony began searching through online courses to see what qualification he could actually earn and what career he could build. That led him to Liverpool John Moores University in England.

Once he started studying in Liverpool, Anthony no longer had to figure out what he wanted to do. His career outlined itself in front of him.

“Liverpool was where the opportunity was…an absolutely excellent college. It’s just a fantastic place. The tutors the way they worked with us so closely because going into it I was worrying you’d be going into a class of 100 people the way you see college on television and there’s these big lecture halls. It’s very impersonal.

“But that wasn’t the experience at all. They focus on each individual. They’re just very, very helpful and the course they put on was excellent.”

After finishing his degree at LJMU, Anthony became a qualified PE teacher in England and earned his master’s degree in Sports and Exercise Psychology. Working in Manchester and studying in Leeds after going to college in Liverpool, Anthony was able to broaden his connections within the sports industry.

Since then he has worked with top level athletes to help them in sports psychology while also starting his own podcast that features some big names across different sports.

The balance between his two areas of expertise, sports psychology and teaching, have helped Anthony to become a very approachable tutor who encourages discussions in lectures to maximize the time he has with his students.

“I believe strongly in working together with the students n my class and will always encourage students to share their opinions to help create interesting discussions. I am also a strong believer in reflective practice and believe that this approach will allow me to improve continuously which will then maximize the student’s potential to achieve their goals,” he said.

The broad nature of Anthony’s skill set and the fact that he has worked internationally in different roles at high levels made him an appealing tutor for Portobello Institute.

Our students continually benefit from his ability to connect with the individual and understand their needs.

“I’m used to working with children, teenagers, adults, whatever it may be. But also when I see students coming in and they’re studying PE, I can better understand them because I’ve taken the scenic route.

“A lot of people come in straight from school, straight to college and then back into a classroom teaching whereas I very much didn’t do that. I know what it’s like to finish school and not really have a clue about what you want to do.

“I’m one of those people who did every job in the world and I found out what I didn’t want to do before I found out what I did want to do. That’s definitely helped me understand students coming from different areas of life,” he said.

Speak to an expert

Niall Downey

Thinking about returning to study as an adult can feel like a big step. I often hear learners say, “I’ve got plenty of experience, but it’s been years since I’ve hit the books.” My role is to dispel those doubts and help you choose the right course to advance your career. Because I’m often the first person you’ll speak with, I take the time to truly listen and to understand your experience and what success would look like for you. My goal is to make the idea of returning to education feel less daunting and more like the exciting next chapter that it should be. It’s rewarding to speak with students at graduation. Their achievement often does wonders for their career, but it also transforms their personal confidence. It’s incredibly satisfying then to help new students take that first step, knowing I’ll see that same pride when they graduate.
