Aaron Mulcahy

When Aaron Mulcahy gained his undergraduate degree in Applied Strength and Conditioning, he had laid the groundwork for his future – one clearly set on becoming a qualified physiotherapist.
He had a clear passion and ambition to go further on his path to help people recover and grow in a hands-on healthcare setting.
“I personally felt as though choosing to study was the right choice for me as I always had a passion for learning and one day becoming a physiotherapist.
“This MSc Physiotherapy is definitely the right choice for me as it gives me the tools I require to become a successful physiotherapist. If I had my time over, I would absolutely choose to study in Portobello Institute again,” he said.
After considering his next steps carefully, Aaron chose to continue his studies with the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-Registration) at Portobello Institute, a decision that brought him closer to his goals while surrounding him with the support, structure, and experience he needed.
Choose the Course for the Career You Want
Aaron had already built a strong academic foundation, but it was his passion for helping others that drove him to take the next step toward becoming a qualified physiotherapist.
“In my decision to study physiotherapy, I was undoubtedly following a passion of mine. Helping people reach their goals has always been a passion of mine,” he said.
He explored different options, but Portobello Institute offered something that stood out with a personalised approach and an environment where students were more than just a number.
“Portobello Institute offers a wonderful programme and a unique environment where each student’s needs are taken into consideration,” he said.
A Supportive, Personalised Student Experience
For Aaron, one of the standout features of Portobello’s MSc programme has been the close-knit learning environment and genuine support from tutors.
“My time as a student at Portobello has been extremely positive and I am very grateful for the close guidance from my lecturers which has enriched my experience endlessly. The small class groups have also allowed me to create lasting friendships,” he said.
He also recognised the long-term value of the connections he was building during his studies.
“The best thing about studying at Portobello is the friends that I have made and the relationships I have formed within my class group. Many of the friends I have made in Portobello will give me a strong network of people in a similar field which will help me in my professional life,” he said.
Would he recommend studying Physiotherapy at Portobello Institute?
“I would definitely recommend Portobello Institute to a friend as the college environment offered is an excellent place to thrive in one’s studies. The small classes offer a fantastic opportunity to develop relationships with the lecturers and grasp the material at a deep level.”
Gaining Real Experience Through Work Placement
As part of his MSc Physiotherapy studies, Aaron has already completed two placements, each offering a valuable look into life as a professional physiotherapist.
“So far in my studies I have completed two blocks of placement. The first placement block was an online placement with Health Academy. The second placement block I worked with Siel Bleu in Cork.”
Both experiences helped him build confidence, adaptability, and a clear sense of direction for his future career.
“Both of my placements gave me a strong insight into the work of a physiotherapist. I believe they have allowed me to work under pressure in different environments which will benefit me in my future career.”
Looking Ahead: A Career in Private Practice
Upon graduating and registering as a physiotherapist, Aaron has his sights on what’s next and it involves taking everything he’s learned and building something of his own.
“After graduating I will hopefully be able to take the skills I have gained from Portobello in the professional field of physiotherapy. Eventually my goal will be to open my own physiotherapy clinic,” he said.
He’s confident he chose the course and path that is right for him.
