Daniel Wilson – The IWFM Level 5 Diploma Was a ‘Powerful Catalyst for My Executive Career’

As Daniel Wilson progressed through increasingly senior facilities management roles, he wanted his strategic knowledge to develop alongside his experience.

Studying the IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management through the Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management helped him cross the threshold and lay the groundwork for future success.

Through the flexible eight-month programme, delivered online with live lectures, Daniel began turning years of operational expertise into strategic thinking he could apply directly in the workplace.

Since completing his studies, he has been accepted as a Fellow of the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (FIWFM), its highest grade of membership, recognising his extensive experience and contribution to the profession.

Where Passion Meets Strategic Development

Daniel is passionate about FM. This passion, he explains, centres on the ability to link the built environment with the end user and create environments that enhance both guest and employee experiences.

“I strive for operational excellence and compliance while looking for the latest technology or innovation to implement where I can,” says Daniel.

His diploma studies helped him develop the knowledge and tools to analyse the evolving role of facilities management, respond to industry developments such as ESG, and bring greater strategic value to the organisations he works with.

A Career Across Hospitality, the Public Sector, and Corporate FM

Daniel describes his career in facilities management as a “progressive journey”, which has taken him across distinct operational environments.

He built a strong foundation in hands-on management within hospitality before moving to facilities provider Acacia in 2011.

There, he worked with public sector clients on projects that involved taking buildings from greenfield sites through to fully functioning community spaces, while developing his knowledge of facilities structures and community-focused management.

Daniel then made the move into corporate FM, overseeing multi-site blue-chip contracts across hard and soft services, multi-tenanted buildings, asset management, and building disposals.

“During this period, I began my studies with Portobello and also transitioned to client-side operations as Senior Facilities Manager for Applegreen, managing a vast portfolio of 125 retail and roadside hospitality properties,” says Daniel.

“This included a totally centralised model and internal facilities helpdesk, and required a sharp focus on rapid response, compliance, and environmental standards.”

Daniel has since taken on the role of Group Facilities Manager for Ireland and Continental Europe with Dalata Hotel Group, where he works to integrate best-in-class facilities management structures across an international hotel brand.

Keeping Pace with a Changing Industry

Throughout his career, Daniel has believed that continued professional development is essential to progressing individually and growing within an organisation.

That mindset led him to Portobello Institute’s Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management, where the industry-focused curriculum and flexibility of the IWFM Level 5 Diploma suited both his ambitions and the demands of working full-time while raising a family.

Daniel explains: “Facilities management is always changing, and studying the diploma allowed me to keep researching best practice, stay focused on implementing strategies I was studying, and add to my arsenal of abilities.

“Studying allowed me to be ‘in the room’ with my peers and fantastic lecturers and take back what I was learning to my own role.”

Learning That Moves with Your Career

When you’re making career changes and adjusting to new organisations and ways of working, studying may not always be at the top of the priority list. For Daniel, the programme’s carefully considered structure gave him the flexibility to keep progressing with his studies while adapting to new professional roles.

“I enjoyed the time as a student thoroughly and am grateful for the experience,” he says.

“The best thing about studying at Portobello is that, at the end, you can come away with an internationally recognised qualification, you get to learn from vastly experienced industry professionals, and you build a network of professional peers across a broad spectrum of the industry.”

He adds: “The interactive nature of the lectures allows for interesting conversations and diverse views while you learn.”

Daniel found that the IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management was particularly well suited to the direction his career was taking.

“In the area of facilities management, a professional qualification of this calibre will broaden your skills base and experience and enhance your career trajectory,” he explains.

“It provided a broad knowledge foundation to my operational experience, allowing me to apply modules of learning to my work environment. The course also provides a solid platform for further studies when I choose to progress academically.”

Delivering Results in the Workplace

Working in senior full-time roles meant Daniel could draw on his own workplace when completing assignments and apply what he was learning to his day-to-day responsibilities.

This gave his studies immediate relevance, with opportunities to introduce changes that would continue to benefit the organisations he worked with.

“The progression of my operational knowledge, enriched by my studies, has created a fantastic foundation for my future,” he reflects.

Among the projects Daniel has found particularly rewarding is the planning and implementation of a new Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

He also highlights his team winning ‘Workplace and Estates Team of the Year’ at the Facilities Management Awards. Daniel had been invited to judge the awards the previous year.

His environmental work received further recognition through an ‘Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Standards’ from the All-Ireland Business Foundation.

He adds: “As I strive to progress to the next level of my career, I feel that this has given me the best opportunity to succeed.”

Preparing for Greater Responsibility

With his diploma completed, Daniel wants to maximise his impact as Group Facilities Manager for Ireland and Continental Europe at Dalata Hotel Group. His focus is on applying what he has learned across the hotel portfolio, introducing innovative practices and developing others as he works.

“This qualification acts as a powerful catalyst for my executive career,” says Daniel. “The comprehensive knowledge I have gained at Portobello enhances and complements my experience, allowing me to progress not just in this industry but across a broad range of industries.”

Daniel also acknowledges the people who helped him complete his qualification. He expresses appreciation for Certification Manager Catherine Green and FM Programme Lead Gerry Kelly, alongside the wider Portobello team, whose encouragement was an important part of his student experience.

Daniel’s ambition continues to grow. He sees further study as part of his future, with his sights set on greater responsibility.

“In the years to come, I hope to study more and push myself professionally to advance into even more senior roles while delivering long-lasting tangible results as I progress,” he shares.
