Denise Sheridan – MA in Early Childhood Studies Building on Existing Experience in Early Years
Denise Sheridan has worked in the early years sector for over a decade and has chosen to deepen her knowledge, follow her passion and open new career opportunities by gaining her MA in Early Childhood Studies.
When she was researching where to study for her master’s she was looking for a course that covered new material more in-depth and a flexible mode of study. She found both of those things and more at Portobello Institute.
“It took me a while to decide on which master’s would suit me best. I wanted something that did not just repeat my existing learning but built on that and also recognised I am a professional within the early years sector.
“Studying with Portobello not only is a flexible way to study but the approach of mentoring, webinars, fantastic up-to-date material and overall support is fantastic.
“Everyone brings their existing knowledge and their experience to the course which is so valuable.
“Not only are we learning the theory of distinctive approaches, but we are also learning the application of theory in the real world and how curricula change to meet changing societal demands.
“I was somewhat concerned about taking on a master’s while working in-person weekdays but have completely enjoyed my experience so far.
“This master’s is challenging me to truly reflect on my own experience, my own setting, my own learning as well as our community shared learning.
“From the moment I began this master’s I have been treated as a professional, my opinions are valued and supported. Ongoing communication, mentoring and encouragement from the master’s Programme Manager Marguerita have been fantastic,” she said.
During her time in the master’s programme, Denise had the opportunity to present at one of Portobello Institute’s Early Years webinars alongside expert Tim Gill. You can watch the webinar here.
Denise has also written a blog post ‘What Does An Aistear Run Emergent Play Service Look Like?’ which has been published on Portobello Institute’s Knowledge Zone, you can read it here.
