Shane McCormack – English Teacher in Beijing Meets Growing Demands of International Education with PGCEi

When Shane McCormack moved to Beijing, he was filled with the excitement of teaching in a new country, immersing himself in a vibrant culture, and stepping into the classroom as an English teacher.

Over the next six years, his role evolved, and he grew into a leadership position within the school, thriving on coaching new teachers, designing curricula, and helping young learners progress.

Shane soon realised that to keep pace with the growing demands of international education, he would need to expand his qualifications.

International schools are now requiring PGCEi (Postgraduate Certificate in Education International) and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), a shift that aligned with his ambitions.

The world of education was changing, and so was he. He knew the next step wasn’t just about professional growth—it was about becoming an even more effective educator, mentor, and leader.

I felt that as I am now in management in an educational setting, the PGCEi would be very helpful to me when coaching and onboarding new teachers, as well as developing the curriculum and structure within my school,” he said.

Choosing Portobello Institute for PGCEi

When it came time to choose where to pursue his studies, he found himself drawn to Portobello Institute. After hearing positive feedback from colleagues and conducting his own research, he knew it was the perfect place for him.

Portobello’s flexible online format suited his busy schedule, and our one-to-one support system provided the confidence he needed to continue his academic journey.

I conducted my own research and found that Portobello was right for me. The online setting proved to be very accessible and the feedback throughout the application process was amazing. I would describe my time as a Portobello student as a very good experience,” he said.

Despite living halfway across the globe, Shane never felt disconnected from his studies. “There’s a seven-or eight-hour time difference, depending on the season,” Shane explains, “but I would get a response to my emails within the hour. The support was incredible.” His tutors, particularly Derek Fox, ensured he never felt alone, guiding him through assignments and offering insights that not only enriched his academic experience but also translated directly into his work.

The best thing when studying at Portobello, for me, was the support I received. Any issues regarding assignments, payment of fees, or general issues that arose were dealt with professionally and without any doubts left in my mind. I have studied in other institutions before, and Portobello far exceeded my expectation when it came to support,” he said.

Following His Passion

Teaching is more than just a job for Shane. It is a passion. “Seeing a child with no English come through my class and leave with a high level of knowledge gives me immense pride,” he reflects.

The PGCEi allowed him to further hone that passion, diving deeper into teaching strategies and educational philosophies that opened his mind to new ways of thinking. “All teachers believe they are the best, but after studying this course, I realised just how much I had to learn.”

Shane’s time as a Portobello student was transformative. He didn’t just complete assignments and tick off academic boxes; he applied his learning in real time. “I’ve already started to implement changes in my school—adapting long-standing procedures to help both teachers and students achieve more. The course wasn’t just theoretical; it was practical, and that’s what made it invaluable.”

The challenges were there, of course. Balancing full-time work, managing a sports club in Beijing, and studying required dedication and time management, but Shane thrived under pressure. “A strict schedule and a few hours here and there made all the difference. And when I finished, the pride I felt in my accomplishments was overwhelming.”

Shaping Futures Through Education

Having completed the PGCEi, Shane is eager for what comes next. This qualification has given him a deeper understanding of educational frameworks and a renewed drive to push boundaries in both his personal and professional life. “This course has opened doors for me—both in the way I lead my school and in how I approach the next steps in my career.”

I now have a PGCEi, and I am using the knowledge gained from it in my everyday life. I also feel I am more qualified to speak my mind on matters of education when in a setting of qualified teachers and professionals,” he said.

As he reflects on his journey, Shane’s message is clear: “Education is a lifelong pursuit. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take the next step, the right course can make all the difference. I had already earned a master’s degree before starting this program, but I’ve learned so much more than I ever expected. Portobello provided the support, the knowledge, and the platform I needed to keep growing.”

This course substantially helps me in an educational setting, but also in a life setting too. The values within this course can range depending on the teaching styles and pedagogy certain philosophers and mentors have taken in the past. After studying this course, it has opened my eyes to different ways students learn and behave depending on the teacher’s actions. This will help me go forward when teaching or coaching and it has a knock-on affect to others around me,” he said.

Shane McCormack’s journey is a testament to the power of education and the impact it can have on a career, a community, and an individual. He’s a leader, a mentor, and above all, a lifelong learner who knows the value of taking that next step, even when you’re already ahead.
