Fiona Kavanagh – Career Change From Accounts Manager to Achieving Her Dream as a Preschool Owner

Alumni of BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies

Early Years

Fiona Kavanagh wanted something different from her career in accounts management and she knew that if she followed her passion for early years education, she could use her skills to open her own preschool setting.

Children and how they learn was what initially sparked my curiosity. I then started researching in a general way and I was hooked. Early years education and care is an area in which you never stop learning and opening your mind to new possibilities.

Studying with Portobello allowed me to achieve my dream of opening my own early years setting and this is something of which I am very proud.

I now own and manage a full daycare setting. I was able to pursue my dreams and that is worth everything in my opinion. I am content and happy working in the early years sector. My qualifications ensure I have an in-depth knowledge of early childhood care and education,” she said.

Fiona gained her level 6 Early Childhood Care and Education qualification and her BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at Portobello Institute and is now studying for her MA in Early Childhood Studies.

She said the blended learning delivery has always helped her to continue working while she studies.

I have spent many years enrolled on different courses at Portobello Institute. I have recommended it to colleagues who are currently enrolled with Portobello too. I find it an easy way to learn and the support is there on hand as needed.

“Blended learning allowed me to work and study at the same time. It took time and dedication but I would have been unable to travel to college because my children were small at the time. Now I would not consider anywhere else except Portobello Institute which was why I was delighted with the opportunity to complete the Master’s.

I love learning new things and the online lectures have resulted in me learning not just from the tutor but from other students. there are always bumps along the journey but these are all easily surmountable with the help of your tutors and the fantastic team,” she said.

Fiona knew that her time working in accounts management had come to an end and she needed to follow her passion and fulfil her potential in her true area of interest; early childhood care and education.
