Garreth Lonergan
At just 22 years old, Garreth Lonergan has turned his passion for sports therapy and fitness into a globetrotting adventure. As a deckhand, therapist, and Pilates instructor aboard a luxury superyacht in the Caribbean, Garreth credits his time at Portobello Institute studying a BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy for enabling him to blend his love for travel and therapy into a fulfilling career.
“Before my time in Portobello Institute, I was in school and took a one-year pre-university physiotherapy course at Coláiste Íde.
“That course gave me advanced entry into the Sports Therapy degree, letting me start straight into second year. Sports Therapy wasn’t on my radar in school because I didn’t know how to access it or where to study it,” he said.
Studying at Portobello Institute proved to be the game-changer Garreth needed.
“It opened up a whole new road for me. I’ve played Gaelic and hurling all my life, so I was always interested in staying fit. This course gave me the skills to become a therapist and help others recover from injury and return to play. Now, I’m using those skills in my career on the yacht,” he said.
Portobello Institute’s unique approach to entry requirements and its focused curriculum stood out.
“It wasn’t [Leaving Cert] points-based, which worked for me because I knew I wouldn’t have the points to get into physiotherapy at other universities. After just two years of study, I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Therapy. It was the right course and the right fit for me,” he said.
Despite the challenges of starting his studies during COVID-19, Garreth reflects on his time at Portobello fondly. “The first year was tough with everything online, but the final year was fantastic. I made friends for life, and the lecturers were incredibly supportive. I left feeling like a confident therapist, ready to take my skills abroad.”
Now thriving in his career, Garreth appreciates how his education has supported his work-life balance.
“The course has been massively beneficial. I can combine two careers—deckhand and therapist—while travelling the world. I also know how to look after myself and prevent injuries,” he said.
Garreth wholeheartedly recommends Portobello Institute to others.
“It’s perfect for anyone passionate about becoming a therapist. The college gives you the motivation and skills to take your career to the next level. But be prepared to commit fully—it requires hard work and sacrifice.
“Taking my career abroad has been the best decision I’ve ever made. I have absolutely no regrets from taking on this course,” he said.
From the classrooms of Portobello Institute to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, Garreth’s story is a testament to what’s possible with determination, the right education, and a sense of adventure.
