Geraldine Nicholson

After many years working in retail, Geraldine returned to study Travel and Tourism and is now employed as a Travel Consultant with Club Travel.

Geraldine Nicholson worked in many retail positions at home and abroad, but knew it was not what she really wanted to do – she wanted to work in travel.  Geraldine got her first taste for travel when she completed a travel and tourism course after her Leaving Certificate, but didn’t pursue it further at the time.

To revive her passion for travel and update her qualifications, Geraldine decided to return to full time education and enrolled on the travel and tourism course at Portobello Institute.  She loved learning about all aspects of the airline, travel agency, hotel and car hire businesses and felt she got an excellent grounding in the travel industry. On completion of the course, Geraldine said “I feel it gives me the full confidence that I am knowledgeable of the travel industry”.

After some time away from college, she was little apprehensive about embarking on this programme of study, but found the level of support offered at Portobello Institute to be just what she needed.  She speaks of her “excellent and dedicated” lecturer, Joanne, as being very informative, easy to talk to and helpful with any questions.  Geraldine notes that Joanne  “was always available on email, after hours as well! … I found her to be particularly supportive when doing our project work”.

For Geraldine, securing work experience in a travel agency environment was extremely important, “I completed work experience one day a week in a travel agent for 8 weeks while doing the course, which was hugely beneficial”. She found this experience to be a distinct advantage when looking for a full time job in a travel agency.

Geraldine now works in Club Travel, where she started as admin assistant and after just 3 months, she moved up to become a travel consultant. She realises that this is the first rung on her new career ladder and reveals “I love working here and I am really enjoying the job. I am still new to the industry and am continuing to learn new things every day”.

Geraldine highly recommends this course and the next QQI full-time course in Travel and Tourism commences in Autumn 2019. To discuss how you can retrain for this industry, call the course advisors on 01 8920000.
