Kieran Dowdall – Upskilling to Advance in Facilities Management

Alumni of IWFM 5

Facilities Management

For Kieran Dowdall, he had reached a ceiling in his role within the facilities management industry.

With a wealth of professional experience already under his belt, he had to look elsewhere to see what he could do to advance his career.

The solution became clear, upskill with a return to education. The remaining questions became where to go and what to study?

“I did some online research to find the best course to suit my needs.

“Portobello had the best course I could find and had a proven track record of success”, he said.

The course in question was our IWFM Level 5 diploma in Facilities Management.

With encouragement from our own Brandon McLean and Catherine Green, whom Kieran says “were really helpful”, he enrolled on the course.

Like many who return to education after a long time, he found the prospect tough, particularly its online delivery.

“I found the idea of an online course very daunting before I started, as I had never done anything like it before, and was unsure how I would find it.

“In looking over the course syllabus I knew the subjects would help me in my day-to-day role and was glad that they touched on all areas of facilities management”, Kieran said.

Kieran’s worries were soon dissipated and at the course’s end, he had high praise for Portobello’s tutors.

“The tutors were great.

“They did their best to keep your attention and show you how the course material can be used in practical ways in our roles.

Gerry Kelly was great. I spoke to him over the phone and the conversation really made me evaluate what I needed to improve on and how I could do it.

Tony O’Gorman was very interesting and definitely went into the most depth about the subjects.

“Anthony Kelly was very engaging and made us consider the changes in the world in an FM context”, he said.

Maybe most importantly, Kieran says he now no longer finds the idea of studying as daunting.

This is especially important as Kieran continues his academia this year with our BSc (Hons) in Facilities & Workplace Management.

And, having gained his IWFM Level 5 diploma, he was able to gain advanced entry into the third year of the program.
