Magdalena Landziak – Becoming a ‘Leader and Change-maker’ for SNA and Inclusive Education

With more than a decade of practical experience as a Special Needs Assistant (SNA) in a mainstream primary school/pre-school Limerick, Magdalena Landziak’s passion and work has always been deeply rooted in inclusive education.

Before choosing to advance her knowledge and practice with an MA in Inclusive Education and SEN she was already deeply embedded in special needs assisting, working as a tutor on SNA courses around the country.

Choosing to lead by example, she wanted to gain the knowledge and qualification to pursue her advocacy for the sector and its future even further.

I believe in lifelong learning and leading by example. To support and empower others – especially SNAs – I needed to deepen my own academic understanding and ensure my practice was grounded in current, evidence-based research. Studying was also an opportunity to connect theory with real classroom practice and advocate more effectively for the SNA profession.

This qualification has elevated my voice and vision. It has deepened my understanding of inclusive education and equipped me to speak confidently with school leaders, stakeholders, and fellow educators. It has helped me become not just a practitioner, but a leader and change-maker in the field,” she said.

Passion For Inclusive Education

Magdalena was drawn to Portobello’s focus on inclusive education, its flexibility, and the strong alignment between the curriculum and her professional goals.

Following her passion for her work and gaining this qualification was the right choice for her to take her career to the next level.

Portobello Institute stood out because of its focus on inclusive education and the flexibility of the programme.

My passion lies in creating inclusive, supportive learning environments where all students – especially those with additional needs – can thrive. I am also deeply passionate about elevating the role of SNAs and providing them with access to quality training.

“This course gave me the theoretical foundation to enhance that work, supporting not only students, but also my fellow SNAs and teachers nationwide.

It was empowering, challenging, and deeply enriching. The course content was relevant and thought-provoking, and the lecturers were knowledgeable and genuinely supportive. I particularly enjoyed connecting with other professionals who shared a commitment to inclusion and social justice in education,” she said.

An Inspiring and Professional Student Experience

Studying at Portobello was a transformative and enriching journey for Magdalena. This course is delivered through blended learning meaning online evenings and weekends so you can study while continuing to work.

“The online learning model suited my schedule as a working professional, and the curriculum aligned perfectly with my passion for inclusion, student voice, and professional development.

Despite being an online course, I felt part of a vibrant, supportive network of learners. The assignments allowed me to reflect on my own practice, and the feedback I received helped me grow both personally and professionally. I also appreciated the practical approach to complex topics.

Portobello Institute offers high-quality, research-informed education in a flexible and accessible way. It’s ideal for professionals looking to deepen their knowledge while continuing to work in the field. The balance of theory and practice makes the learning meaningful and applicable.

It was the perfect next step in my professional journey. The course helped me refine my practice, elevate the standard of the CPD training I deliver, and expand the reach of my advocacy for SNAs across Ireland,” she said.

Shaping the Future of Inclusive Education in Ireland

Already working in education, Magdalena was able to apply her new learning directly in real-life settings.

One of the highlights during her time at Portobello was the continued development of Amygdala Magazine, Ireland’s first national magazine for SNAs, which she founded before enrolling and developed throughout her studies.

The course deepened my knowledge and significantly enhanced the quality and direction of the magazine, ensuring it became even more research-informed and impactful.

“I also designed and launched SNA Academy, a dedicated CPD platform offering webinars, reflection tools, and resources tailored to SNAs. Both projects were strengthened by insights from the programme and are firmly grounded in inclusive education principles.

It’s solidified my confidence in both academic and practical spheres. The experience has enhanced my credibility, broadened my impact, and helped me bridge the gap between policy, research, and classroom practice – preparing me to continue supporting SNAs and advocating for inclusive education,” she said.

Moving Forward and Making an Impact

After graduating, Magdalena has ambitious and meaningful goals which are now backed up by her depth of knowledge and master’s qualification.

My goal is to expand SNA Academy further and collaborate with education centres, schools, and policymakers to ensure SNAs have access to the professional recognition and support they deserve.

“I also aim to publish more inclusive resources, design accredited training programmes, and advocate nationally on behalf of SNAs.

Studying at Portobello Institute was a transformative experience. It not only validated my work but inspired me to dream bigger.

“To any SNA or educator considering this course – go for it. The ripple effect of investing in your own learning will be felt in every classroom, conversation, and community you touch.

“I am also deeply grateful for the guidance and support I received throughout the journey, particularly from my supervisor Dr Marguerita Magennis and Maria Dowdall (MA), whose encouragement and expertise made a lasting impact on both my academic work and professional growth,” she said.
