Before beginning the course, Ross’s background had a focus in healthcare previously working in St James Hospital on the medical side with a transition over to the corporate side of the organisation. Since this move Ross has been working very closely with the entire Facilities Management team across security, catering, cleaning and hard services including the engineering department.
Ross loves working in a FM capacity faced with daily challenges and hurdles and understands you need to be ready and fully engaged to deal with all tasks and that’s what keeps him motivated and eager to learn more in this very complex profession.
“My background and knowledge of FM before commencing the Level 3 course was limited, and completing multiple relevant modules was a massive help for me in increasing my knowledge and experience in my current role, applying what I was learned into my day to day role.”
Ross admits that his manger recommended him to apply for this course and this area of study was always something that caught his attention and interested him from his younger days in school.
“I was always interested in business and finance but also wanted to know the ins and outs of how a company ran its day to day organisation from an operational perspective whilst having a keen interest in how it was managed from a financial point of view.”
Ross found the course to be quick and he was interested from the induction through to the last class. “The course was very well run and the support from the tutors second to none. I must compliment several tutors as they were outstanding in helping with any questions or issues and from my time in Portobello hearing other people’s opinions everyone felt the same – Gerry Kelly, Tony O’Gorman, John Cunniffe and Mairead Roche.”
Ross described the support as impeccable with exceptional response times on emails and what was really important for him as he was made to feel comfortable knowing that there would always be someone to help should he require assistance.
“I most definitely feel confident putting the theory and skills learned into practice in my own organisation and role and have definitely done so in the past and will continue to do so for the rest of my time working in Facilities Management.
Modules highlights for Ross include Procurement & Specification and Health & Safety which he felt to be broken down very well and explained exceptionally.
For anyone looking to learn the basics of Facilities Management as an introduction to the business Ross would recommend the IWFM Level 3 course and for those looking to expand their strategic knowledge the Level 5 offered by Portobello Institute fits this object.
The future looks bright for Ross with an inspiring goal to keep learning every day through employment and education and we want to take this opportunity to wish him all the very best in his future plans.
