Sam Whelan – Confident, Career-Ready, and Set to Make His Mark in Fashion

When Sam Whelan began thinking about his future during his Leaving Certificate years, he knew he had a passion for the fashion industry and an interest in business. What he did not yet have was a clear picture of how these two areas could come together in a professional career.

Studying the BA (Hons) Fashion Management at Portobello Institute gave Sam the opportunity to combine both. After graduating with first-class honours, he is now focused on securing a full-time role with a fashion brand where culture and creativity matter.

Discovering Portobello

Looking back, Sam is certain that studying for a degree was the right choice. He valued education and was excited to explore a subject that genuinely inspired him.

Portobello Institute, he reflects, stood out for its recognised BA (Hons) Fashion Management programme and professional, industry-focused approach.

Sam explains: “The reason I chose Portobello Institute was because it was one of the only colleges I saw that provided a full level 8 in the course that I wanted to pursue – fashion.

“The degree is accredited by London Metropolitan University (since updated to University of Essex), which is massive. To have a certificate with that calibre behind it is so beneficial.

“I had also researched Portobello through its website and Instagram, where I had seen Programme Lead Anne Marie McAuley’s face pop up a few times on my Instagram feed. I was impressed by what she talked about. It seemed extremely professional.”

The Rachel Green Effect and an Early Love of Fashion

Sam’s interest in fashion began as a child and continued to grow throughout his teenage years.

“When I first watched Rachel Green in Friends, played by Jennifer Aniston, rise through the ranks at Bloomingdale’s, where she became a buyer for Ralph Lauren, I was fascinated,” says Sam.

“I loved that show and watched it over and over! I was really interested in Ralph Lauren and his whole career journey.”

At Portobello, Sam was able to turn that long-standing passion into practical knowledge and a clearer sense of professional direction.

He elaborates: “I absolutely followed my passion by studying this course and the knowledge I gained has been invaluable. The college staff were always there if I needed help or assistance, and I was never afraid to ask for it.”

Becoming the Professional He Wants to Be

Alongside developing his knowledge of fashion and business, Sam credits the guidance he received from his tutors with helping him grow as a student and prepare for his career.

“I absolutely loved my time at Portobello Institute,” says Sam. “Orla, Sinead, and Anne-Marie were always there for me and helped me in every way they could.

“They helped me change who I am as a student and become someone who is ready to bring their skills and knowledge into the right role.

“The trips, the teachers, the guest speakers, and the professionalism across the board were some of the best things about studying at Portobello.

“The location of the college in Dublin City Centre was also great, and the classes are so convenient and flexible if you work full-time.”

Seeing the Industry Up Close

One of the highlights of Sam’s studies was travelling to Paris to attend Première Vision, an international trade show for the fashion industry.

“It was really valuable to see behind the scenes and gain a better understanding of how the industry works,” he points out.

The experience gave Sam and his classmates the chance to connect their studies with the realities of the global fashion sector, from materials and production to emerging trends and commercial decision-making.

Guest speakers also brought different industry perspectives into the classroom. Sam particularly enjoyed hearing from Fionnuala Moran, whose talk explored sustainability and its growing importance across the sector.

“I was delighted when Fionnuala Moran came to speak at the college about sustainability,” he says. “I have always been a fan of hers and how Portobello emphasises sustainability in its modules. The subject is so important and close to my heart.”

Rethinking Fashion Through Sustainability

Sustainability became an important part of Sam’s studies and shaped how he thought about the future of the industry. Through programme modules, guest speakers, and project work, he examined the responsibilities facing fashion brands and the changes taking place across the sector.

“During the coursework and the group projects we were given as part of assignments, my group decided to do a podcast episode on sustainability in Ireland,” Sam explains.

“This was received really well by our tutors and really allowed me to express myself in a way I never thought I could.”

Stepping Outside His Comfort Zone

Sam challenged himself throughout his time studying Fashion Management at Portobello, taking on projects that proved crucial in helping him become a more confident speaker and communicator.

One project involved helping to run the Portobello Fashion social media page, where he conducted interviews, created posts, and shared his perspective on fashion trends and current topics.

“It was really exciting and completely outside my comfort zone,” he recalls. “It was not something I would usually have done.”

Presentations were another important part of Sam’s development. He shares that public speaking did not come naturally to him at first, but regular practice gradually gave him greater confidence.

“The presentations really build your confidence, which is such an important skill to have,” Sam explains. “I used to get very nervous, but the more presentations I did, the more comfortable I became. Learning how to maintain that confidence really helped me grow.”

Prepared to Progress in the Fashion Industry

While completing his BA (Hons) Fashion Management degree, Sam worked as a Sales Assistant at Dr. Martens, gaining practical experience within the industry alongside his studies. Now a first-class honours graduate, he is ready to progress into a new full-time fashion role and build his career.

“For my thesis, the research was based on cultural branding within the industry, so I would love to be able to join a brand where culture is important,” says Sam.

“Portobello was absolutely right for me,” he adds. “The BA (Hons) Fashion Management course covers a lot of really valuable content around brand strategy, buying, and merchandising, and I feel like that knowledge has genuinely prepared me for the industry.

“Anyone with an interest in the fashion industry should consider Portobello Institute. I feel from my time there, it is the place to be.”
