Simon Murphy – Finding the Right Course for His Career Path with BA (Hons) Physical Education

Simon Murphy, a 23-year-old from Dublin, showcases how the right educational environment can help you rediscover your passion and thrive after trying a number of other study routes. His journey underscores the power of making the right choice for career you want and finding the right fit for you.

Simon pivoted from an arts degree to a career he is truly passionate about and interested in with an education pathway through our BA (Hons) Physical Education degree.

“After finishing my Leaving Cert in 2019, unsure of my career path, I pursued an arts degree, studying Spanish and Irish, supported by a sports scholarship. I enjoyed these subjects in school but decided to drop out by Christmas. I took a year out to work at Gas Networks Ireland, gaining valuable office experience and insight into the professional world.

“In 2020, I enrolled in a PLC in Pre-University Physiotherapy at Coláiste Íde, which led me to study Athletic Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation at Carlow IT.

“Initially, I thought I’d found my dream course, but during my first year, I discovered Portobello Institute’s level 8 BA (Hons) Physical Education course. My Leaving Cert results qualified me for entry, something I hadn’t achieved with DCU or UCC’s PE programmes.

“Making the decision to switch again was challenging, but it was the right choice. Since joining the course, I’ve thrived, and now I’m in my final year, confident in my path forward,” he said.

Simon’s story resonates with many who may have felt uncertain about their direction after finishing school. He initially pursued subjects he enjoyed, but it was through diverse experiences – working, a PLC programme, and even starting another degree – that he discovered his true calling and the right course.

He explains how he finally found the right path for the career he wants through Portobello Institute.

“I chose Portobello Institute over other providers because it offered a unique opportunity to pursue a level 8 physical education degree that aligned perfectly with my career goals.

“Unlike traditional universities, Portobello Institute provided a more direct and specialised route into the field, which was important to me after realising my passion for sports and education.

“Another factor was accessibility. My Leaving Cert results hadn’t been sufficient for other PE programs, but Portobello Institute recognised my potential and qualifications, allowing me to pursue the course I had always aspired to. The smaller class sizes and personalised approach to education at Portobello were also appealing, as they provided an environment where I felt supported and valued.

“Additionally, the course structure was practical and career-focused, preparing me not just academically but also professionally. This practical approach, combined with Portobello’s reputation for producing graduates who succeed in the industry, made it the perfect choice for me,” he said.

What drew Simon to Portobello Institute was not just the course itself, but the environment it offered.

The focus on personalised learning, smaller classes, and approachable lecturers created a space where he felt valued and supported.

This is particularly significant for students who may have felt lost in the larger, more impersonal structures of traditional universities.

Simon’s experience highlights how Portobello Institute fosters a sense of community and belonging. It’s about more than just academics; it’s about creating a space where students can thrive, connect with their peers and lecturers, and ultimately feel empowered to pursue their passions.

“I absolutely followed my passion by studying this course. From a young age, I’ve been deeply passionate about sports, fitness, and helping others achieve their physical potential.

“Growing up, I was actively involved in various sports, which gave me first hand experience of the positive impact physical activity has on mental and physical well-being. This ignited my interest in understanding how the body works and how to support others in leading healthier, more active lives.

“My passion also extends to teaching and inspiring others, which is why physical education felt like the perfect fit. I love the idea of combining my enthusiasm for sports with education, encouraging young people to develop a lifelong appreciation for physical fitness.

“The course has given me the tools and knowledge to turn this passion into a career, teaching PE and promoting healthy lifestyles.

“What excites me most is the opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives, helping them build confidence and resilience through physical activity. Studying this course has allowed me to align my love for sports and teaching into a meaningful path that I’m genuinely excited about,” he said.

Simon’s story is an inspiring reminder that it’s never too late to find the right education pathway for you.
