Steven Chen – Pathway to Physiotherapy via Sports Therapy and Working with Shamrock Rovers

Steven Chen is a graduate of Portobello Institute’s BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy, a full-time, three-year programme that qualifies graduates to work as professional sports therapists and is awarded by the University of Essex.

Speaking on his graduation day, Steven shared insights into his experience at Portobello Institute.

How would you sum up your time studying at Portobello Institute?

“It was really enjoyable, and it was really enjoyable studying something I love. It gives the flexibility to do a lot of self-learning which really suits my personality. The workplace environment is really fantastic.

“There are lots of sports therapy related work placements such as football teams and GAA teams which really suited my own personality and interests.”

How do you feel reflecting on everything you’ve done to get here and what emotions are you feeling?

“Really glad, and really proud of myself. The first year was during COVID-19, which was really tough. Just really looking forward to seeing my friends and my class, they are friends for life to be honest.

“We still talk even when we graduate, with a lot of us going on to do master’s or work full-time which is really great.”

What’s next for you following your graduation?

Following his graduation, Steven has progressed onto a further Physiotherapy programme and had undertaken a placement at Shamrock Rovers academy, where he is now working part-time. He is positive about his experiences and credits his undergraduate BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree from Portobello Institute with giving him a strong foundation:

“I got onto the Physiotherapy programme at RCSI, I did my placement at Shamrock Rovers academy, and I am now working part-time there. I am enjoying every second of it. The foundation that sports therapy gave me is incredible really.”

Steven’s story is a fantastic example of how Portobello Institute’s BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy provides a strong foundation for a range of careers, including as a steppingstone to becoming a physiotherapist.

Portobello Institute’s MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration) programme equips you with the knowledge and experience to become a registered physiotherapist. This full-time, two-year programme is ideal for those with a related science degree who aspire to work as physiotherapists at a master’s level.
