Tadhg Harnedy – A Facilities Management Journey from Diploma to MSc with Portobello Institute

Tadgh Harnedy’s academic journey with Portobello Institute showcases the transformative power of education at every stage of life.

Tadgh, a graduate of the BSc (Hons) Workplace and Facilities Management programme, embodies the spirit of continuous growth and the pursuit of knowledge. His story is an inspiration to anyone considering returning to education or seeking to advance their career through higher learning.

Tadgh’s journey began with the IWFM Level 5 Diploma, a program designed for facilities managers and those in middle or senior management roles.

Upon completion of the diploma, Tadgh took advantage of the advanced entry option, allowing him to enter year 3 of the BSc (Hons) Facilities and Workplace Management degree program. This pathway enabled him to earn his level 8 degree in just one year.

The BSc program, a blended learning experience, further enhanced Tadgh’s knowledge and skills in facilities management. The program’s curriculum covers various disciplines, including financial and risk management, leadership, project management, operations management, innovation, and business development.

“I would call it open, transparent, lot of interaction between classes and great feedback from tutors. A very enjoyable experience from start to finish,” he said.

Tadgh’s commitment to learning didn’t stop there. He has since enrolled in the MSc Workplace & Facilities Management, continuing his academic journey with Portobello Institute.

His pursuit of knowledge is driven by a desire for continuous growth and professional development.

“Ambition. I’m not done yet. I started with my IWFM 5 Diploma, and I have now completed the degree and started the MSc. I am already thinking what’s next? It has empowered me and made me grow. It has created a real yearn to learn and grow more. I am loving the experience this late in life to be on this journey,” he said.

Tadgh’s drive and love of learning exemplifies the opportunities for professional advancement our students benefit from at Portobello Institute.

Our flexible learning options, including blended learning and advanced entry pathways, cater to the needs of working professionals and busy parents, enabling them to upskill and enhance their career prospects.

Tadgh’s passion for sustainability is evident in his future aspirations.

“I am considering and am looking very much at sustainability and looked at the possibility of an MBA in sustainability and maybe a PhD or doctorate in FM, which I don’t think is available here yet, but it’s something I am chasing. From there, progressing in work,” he said.

Tadgh’s story is a powerful example of how taking a leap with an 8-month IWFM Diploma can open career and education pathways to continuing professional development and growth beyond limits.

His dedication to expanding his knowledge and skills, coupled with his ambition to make a positive impact in the field of facilities management, makes him a true inspiration.

Portobello Institute is proud to have played a role in his journey and looks forward to witnessing Tadgh’s continued success.
