Jacky de Vries
Creative, energetic and not afraid to get outside my comfort zone.
I love helping people and having this job allows me to guide people in the right direction so they can follow the career they want.
How long have you worked in the Facility Sector?
After numerous years in the Hospitality sector, I worked for almost 4 years in the Facility Management sector.
What inspires you about working in education?
Being able to help someone improve and progress to a career they are passionate about has been an important motivator for me to start my career in education.
Author Henry B. Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influence stops.” Or, as teacher and astronaut Christa McAuliffe put it, “I touch the future: I teach.”
Have you a story that you recall that touched you/made you laugh/made you cry?
The story of a professor handing out a paper with just a black dot. He asked the students to write an essay about what they saw. When they handed in the papers, he saw that all students wrote an essay about the black dot. He told them that the same happens in life. We focus on the things that bother us, the disappointments in life. But the dots are very small compared to everything we have in our lives. Take your eyes away from the black dots and enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with love!
How do you feel when you have helped a student reach a decision on their course choice?
Today’s jobs are more sophisticated, and employers are expecting more with respect to skill, complexity, and specialization. I know that college level experiences provide exposure to a variety of topics that will help students expand their horizons. Being able to be part of and support the education and wellbeing of students, the current workforce and the workforce of the future I find very fulfilling.
