Overview
What will I study during this Postgraduate Cert Fashion Buying & Merchandising course?
Considering and understanding the complex critical paths in range planning including balancing lead times, design options, pricing strategies, sourcing strategies and the movement of stock into and out of the business are core elements of the Strategic Fashion Buying & Merchandising module. Factors affecting the supply chain including product market strategies and external forces within the market are also studies during this module.
Having the ability to forecast trends needs a complete understanding of the design and development of a complete range for a fashion season. Portobello Institute has designed and developed the module of Garment Production & Global Sourcing to give students the opportunity to develop these skills. This module covers in detail design and development of an entire range, garment specification and construction.

Global Sourcing and Supply Chain Management
This module aims to
Managing effective and efficient Supply and Service Chains is a crucial element for gaining competitive advantage. This module gives students a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of global sourcing and supply chain management. It provides insight into the broad range of activities concerned global sourcing and how it integrates into supply chain management, supporting the achievement of target sales for fashion retail. The module presents models, concepts, and solution methods that are important for the design, control, operation and management of supply and service chains.
The module aims to:
- develops learners’ understanding of the concept and initiatives of sustainability in global sourcing which includes corporate social responsibility. This will include the supply chain impact on communities and society, environmental aspects of procurement, ethical trading and working standards.
- looks at the alignment of sustainable goals within the supply chain which has local and global dimensions and developing the area for organisational commitment, procedures, systems, and practices.
- The topics that will be covered in the module include the benefits and reasons for international sourcing, patterns of international trade, reasons for protectionism, trade barriers, welfare effects of international economic policies, forms of regional economic integration, balance of payments, and determinants of exchange rates.

Strategic Fashion Buying and Merchandising
The module provides an integrated approach by introducing students to the principles and practices of buying, merchandising, coupled with developing their awareness of the need to be strategic about their decisions. A variety of factors contributing to range planning is considered, including commercially balanced groups of design options, lead times, the significance of pricing strategies, effective sourcing strategies, the movement of stock into and around the business, and the use of merchandising data to help in the development of a range plan, formulas in merchandise planning such as ‘open to buy’ and fashion movement theories and models. The function of fabric and garment technology and design along the critical path is explained. Students explore factors which influence development of buying and merchandising strategies and their co-relation to the company business strategy.
In addition to building commercial awareness, the module develops key skills in numeracy, problem-solving, critical analysis, professional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.

- consider the strategic role fashion buying and merchandising plays within organisations in the fashion industry
- scrutinize contemporary approaches to the strategic decision-making process for buyers and merchandisers and develop ability and skills to appraise the changing environment and distinctive contexts within which fashion organisations operate

The module fosters knowledge and understanding of financial aspects of the global fashion industry. The financial decision-making process demands the understanding of key financial management issues, performance indicators and methodologies to critically analysing accounting and financial information.
Strong financial literacy is essential in business. The module will also provide an overview of global economic factors and their impact on the fashion industry.
This module aims to:
- provide students with an advanced-level analysis of the theory and practice of management accounting and finance in a fashion business setting.
- provide practical methods and approaches to enable fashion business managers and entrepreneurs to understand and use financial information to make effective business decisions.
- introduce and examine the preparation and use of accounting and information to inform financial decisions in the fashion industry.
- provide an understanding of key performance indicators, cashflow management, full costing, working capital management techniques and the budgeting process to manage finances and support management decisions on investment projects and making capital investment decisions.

Strategic Management for Fashion Retailing
The module draws on strategy management theories, frameworks, and models to develop students’ strategic and analytical thinking skills and promote their application to set, evaluate or adapt organisational strategies in response external and internal factors in the context of the fashion industry.
Students broaden their appreciation of current developments in fashion retailing and explore the environment and the drivers of change in the sector while being encouraged to reflect on influence of the organisational values, culture and vision on strategic decision making.

- equip students with the knowledge, skills, and techniques to make informed strategic decisions
- scrutinize contemporary approaches to the strategic fashion management process
- introduce tools to appraise the changing environment and distinctive contexts within which fashion retailers operate.

How will I learn?
The Difference between Blended and Online with Webinars Delivery Modes
There are two blended learning delivery mode options to study courses in Portobello Institute.
Blended learning offers you the opportunity to study with lectures delivered on-site at the weekends.
Online with Webinars – you will not be required to attend on-site lectures if you are enrolled on a course with this delivery mode. All lectures are delivered online and are recorded so you can catch-up later.

What is Online with Webinar Learning?
Online with Webinar Learning is a form of blended learning. It re-structures the content introducing online learning together with interactive webinars and one to one tutor support. This mode of delivery includes contact tuition (by webinar) and web-based e-learning sessions. The e-learning platform is interactive including recorded sessions, webinars with weekly content and assigned tasks to themes and topics.
There are webinars held at regular intervals including the commencement of each module. Attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged for optimal learning. The webinars are designed to support students understand the requirements of the learning outcomes, the expectations of the assessment and meet their tutor for the module.
What is a webinar?
A webinar, in the context of online learning, is a lecturer delivering a presentation or class online to a group of students. We use specifically designed e-learning software so you can participate in the class just as if you were present in the same room. You can ask a question of the lecturer at any stage during the class.
Interactive break-out rooms
The software is designed with “break-out rooms” where you can discuss a topic or complete a group exercise with a smaller group from your class. You will need a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone that has internet connection, an audio facility so you can hear and speak during the class and a camera so your lecturer and fellow class participants can see you.
Secure online learning environment
The webinar is a secure online environment and only those permitted entry by the lecturer can gain access to the “classroom”. Webinars are recorded during each session and should you miss a session, you can catch up with the recorded session at a later date. You will only be able to access Webinars of the group you are assigned to.
Peer to Peer Support
Learning from the experience of other students is often cited as an integral part of any learning journey through a programme. This programme is conducted primarily online and to achieve peer to peer learning, we create study groups. This is a group of students either with a similar research interest or located regionally for ease of “meeting up”. Many graduates tell us that the relationships they build in their study group, offers them a professional network to tap into through out their careers as well as some lifelong friendships.

Online Learning Portal
During the induction webinar, we will show you how to navigate and find what you need with all of the information you need to complete this programme uploaded on to the learning portal. The content of this programme is set out in an easy to follow format with a combination of notes, articles, podcasts and other materials that will help you to understand the subject and complete your assessment. You will need basic computer skills to search the internet and type a word document to complete your assignment.
Course Structure
This course is delivered over 2 semesters with supported webinars held once per month. These are recorded so you can catch up later if you are unable to attend the live session. This programme consists of four core modules. You will complete two modules in each semester.
Each module has 2 * half day webinars designed to support the student to complete the modules scheduled for that semester. Webinars are generally held on a Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Attendance at webinars is recommended for an optimal learning experience and achievement. Webinars are delivered with the purpose of introducing the module lecturer, setting out the learning outcomes, content, the assessment strategy and expectations for skills/knowledge development.
All of the course material is held on an online learning portal which is an easy to use online platform specifically designed for online learning programmes. During the induction, students will be introduced to the platform with practical demonstration of how to use the portal and access lessons quickly and easily. To complete this course, students must have a basic knowledge of using a computer and searching the internet for research purposes.

Portobello Institute organises trips each year to the following major fashion events in the annual calendar;

These are usually one day return trips and are booked with minimal cost for students. They are not included in the fees and are optional.
Guest Lecturers
Once off guest lectures are organised throughout the calendar year to give students an opportunity to gain insight into either a particular brand, the career of an established and successful professional in the fashion industry or an upcoming trend in fashion. These lecturers vary year to year but are always an interesting experience for our students.
How will I be assessed?
SMART assessments – we use a range of assessments for each module designed to support a broad range of learning styles, giving you the opportunity to excel.
The primary aim of the varying assessment styles is to support you to demonstrate your knowledge of theory and practical as a result of a range of assessments.
All of these assessment methods are seeking to support you to combine theory with scenario-based learning and how to practically implement these methods into your everyday practice.

How do I apply?
Entry is by direct application to Portobello Institute.
There are entry criteria available to students with differing qualifications/experience levels and these are detailed below.
This programme is intended for applicants with a primary degree preferably but not limited to business, accountancy, commerce, fashion design, retail management – or a related discipline. A lower second-class honours degree or international equivalent is required. Applicants with substantial relevant work experience will also be considered – see below.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.
Entry using Experiential Learning
Students may apply for entry to the PGC Fashion Buying & Merchandising using experience gained in the workplace in place of prior educational qualifications if they meet the eligibility criteria.
Applications are reviewed on a case by case basis with practical knowledge a key criterion for entry via this route.
