Portobello Institute’s foundations lie in early years education since its establishment offering childcare courses since 1981.

Year on year, our graduates have made significant impacts within the early year’s sector working within county childcare committees, Pobal, DCEDIY and teaching on early years programmes. Successfully opening and running early years settings and Montessori schools have been the career choices of many of our graduates.

The QQI Level 5 and 6 courses in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and Montessori Teaching provide you with the opportunity to obtain the nationally recognised qualification opening up employment opportunities to you as well as offering a path of progression to degree programmes

For those wishing to progress to degree level, we offer Level 7, Level 8 and Masters programmes in Early Childhood Studies. Our degrees are DCEDIY approved and provide you with a broad range of opportunities.

We have developed multiple delivery modes for our childcare courses, ensuring there is an option to suit your individual needs that allows you to fit your study around your busy work and home life.

Our early year degree programmes and QQI courses in ECCE and Montessori are now available to study through full-time and part-time evening options. We also offer blended and online childcare courses.

The programme management and tutoring team for our early year’s department have been carefully selected on the basis of their qualifications, combined experience in the early year’s sector and education, and their belief of the impact higher education can have on practitioners, children and families. Each member of our tutoring team provides a wealth of industry knowledge and experience and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with you. BA (Ord) Early Childhood Studies – Starts Feb ’22

BA (Ord) Early Childhood Studies is delivered through blended learning, you can work full time and complete this degree. Upon completion of this Level 7 degree you will be eligible to gain the higher capitation grant from the DCYA (now DCEDIY) for your role in an early childhood centre.

Delivered through blended learning, you can work full-time and study this MA in Early Childhood Studies. As with any other profession holding a Masters Degree will give you the edge, keep you abreast of the latest research in early years care and education and build further on the strong foundation of knowledge you have acquired from your undergraduate studies.

BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies – Starts Mar ’22

If you hold a Level 7 BA (Ord) degree in Early Childhood Studies you can top up your degree to a Level 8 BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies. Depending on when you start, it will take just 8 – 10 months through blended learning. This final year course consists of an individual research project with one to one tutor support.

Delivered by blended learning with webinars, this Early Childhood Care and Education qualification allows you to open your own setting or work in the capacity of a room leader, supervisor or manager in an early years setting.
